CHAPTER XV

December 30th. 11:45 pm. Unknown location.

Tap, tap, tap. Echoes bounced off the walls as Komarov’s foot beat against the floor. His eyes drilled holes into one of the ornate paintings that hung in his study. He checked his watch for the countless time. Their source had told him to expect news, but that was nearly an hour ago. Komarov had nothing: no calls, no texts, or anything that could calm his agitated mind. He knew Anna and Jake wouldn’t fail. And he knew that they wouldn’t try to double-cross him, no matter how persuasive Daniels could be. Anna wouldn’t do anything that could put her parents’ lives in jeopardy. But he was still uneasy. One pull of the wrong string, and it would all unravel. And they were too close to have that happen.

His phone rang on his desk. Komarov snatched it up and put it to his ear. “Well?”

“I’m outside the train station, still waiting for the cops to leave,” Ivan informed over the line. “But there’s a problem.”

“Define ‘problem,’” Komarov growled.

“Our source was wrong. The van had escorts. Daniels and two other agents.”

Komarov’s cheeks burned. He’d have to make another call later. “What happened?” he asked.

Ivan continued. “Goode and Wallis ambushed the van and got the vials, but then they got chased into the woods. There… I don’t know, they crashed. They were hanging over a cliff, right over the Potomac.”

A lump formed in his throat. “What. Happened?” Komarov demanded.

“Wallis got pulled out in time. But- but they couldn’t get Goode. She fell, and took the vials with her.” Ivan fell silent, and when he spoke next, his voice was barely above a whisper. “They think she’s gone.”

His hand dropped from his ear and Komarov nearly threw the phone at the wall. He bit back every curse he knew. The first set of vials was missing, the second was somewhere in the Potomac, and his engineer was just presumed dead. The string wasn’t being pulled, it was being cut.

Komarov took a deep breath and tried to compose himself. He returned the phone to his ear. “What about the vials from San Antonio?”

“The CIA has them,” Ivan answered. “They’re at Langley. With the crash, Goode and Wallis didn’t exactly have time to intercept those, too.”

“And Wallis? Where’s he now?”

“They’re moving him to Langley, too. They think that if he’s somewhere we can’t get to him, they can get him to cooperate.”

“There’s nowhere that’s safe from us,” Komarov said matter-of-factly. He pinched the bridge of his nose. “I’ll have our source take care of Wallis and get the vials there, and have someone fish out the ones in the river. You find the briefcase. I have to find a last-minute replacement for Goode.”

“Replacement?” Ivan echoed.

“Yes. Unless Goode’s ghost can build the device, which I doubt, we need another engineer.”

“Do we have time? And should we?”

“What?”

“It’s just that things are moving so fast, and Daniels is starting to figure it out. Maybe we take the vials and wait until things cool down.
